Eat With Your Eyes: Food and Drink on Instagram

This exercise is meant to stimulate discussion following the lecture on "Food in and as Art" for the course Food & Drink in the Ancient Mediterranean, as preparation for the 7-10 page paper assignment.

Instagram is one of the most popular social media outlets in the world, and many people use it as a platform to post photos of their meals. Is it oversharing? Is it food porn? Is it successful marketing? Is it art?

Find and read an article on the trend of photographing food on Instagram. Bring it with you to class, along with 1-3 pictures of food on Instagram - yours or someone else's. Be ready to discuss the images of food and what they say about the person who took them, the person who made them, where and when they were taken, and what they reflect about the culture of food today and how it helps us to understand the way food was portrayed in ancient art.
